A .video domain does not host or stream anything
Worth clearing up first, because the name invites the assumption: a .video domain gives you an address, nothing else. The extension does not host files, transcode anything or stream. Your footage still needs somewhere to live, whether that is YouTube, Vimeo, a self-hosted player or a hosting plan with enough bandwidth to serve it. The domain sets the expectation and the hosting does the work, and those are two separate purchases.
With that said, the case is a decent one. Videographers, production companies and showreel sites get an extension that names the medium in five letters, shorter than .productions and more specific than .studio. Search engines take no category meaning from it, so your titles and page copy still do the ranking, but a person reads it instantly and that is the point of a descriptive extension.
The choice most buyers are really weighing is .video against .tv. Tuvalu's country code has decades of broadcast association behind it, and Google's own multi-regional guidance names it among the vanity country codes it treats as generic. .video is a generic extension by design, costs slightly less on our list, and says video rather than television, which matters when what you make is corporate, wedding or social content rather than programming.
United TLD Holdco held the original delegation from December 2014 and IANA transferred the extension to Dog Beach, LLC in June 2021, the same Identity Digital company that runs .reviews. Anyone may register one, and nothing about your work is checked.
Is .video the right choice for you?
We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.
.video works well if
- You shoot and edit for a living and want an address that names the service in five letters rather than a padded phrase.
- You are building a showreel site that sits apart from your main company domain, so the extension does the describing for you.
- Your business name is already taken on .com and .co.uk, and yourname.video is available and reads better than a hyphenated version.
- You produce corporate or event footage rather than programming, so .tv would overpromise and .video says exactly what you make.
Look elsewhere if
- You expected video hosting with it. A domain is an address, so you still need a platform or a plan with the bandwidth to serve the files.
- Your clients are local businesses who search on Google UK. A .co.uk carries the geographic signal that no generic extension can give you.
- Price: over three times a .co.uk every year, for a description your homepage headline already makes in the first three seconds.
Making programming rather than corporate films? A .tv carries decades of broadcast association that a generic extension cannot. See .tv pricing.
.video vs .tv: which should you register?
This is the comparison worth taking seriously, because the two extensions cost within a few pounds of each other and mean different things. .tv is Tuvalu's country code, delegated in March 1996 and managed by Tuvalu's Ministry of Transport, Energy, Communications and Innovation. .video is a generic extension from the 2012 application round.
.tv reads as broadcast. Channels, series, live output, anything that behaves like television. Google states in its multi-regional guidance that it treats .tv as a generic extension rather than a country-targeted one, so the Tuvalu connection costs you nothing in search. .video reads as the medium itself, which fits a service business better than a channel: wedding films, corporate work, property tours, training content.
If you are naming a channel, take the .tv. If you are naming the service that produces the footage, .video is the more honest word and slightly the cheaper one.

.video domain questions, answered
What people ask us before registering a .video domain.
Can't find what you're looking for?
Ask us directlyNo. A domain is an address and nothing more, on this extension as on every other. You still need somewhere for the files to live and something to play them, whether that is YouTube, Vimeo, a self-hosted player or a hosting plan with the bandwidth behind it. Every domain we register includes free DNS management, email forwarding and one free 10GB mailbox, so pointing the name at whatever platform you choose is included.
Pick .tv if you are naming a channel and .video if you are naming the service that makes the films. .tv carries broadcast association going back to 1996, and Google states in its own guidance that it treats the extension as generic rather than tied to Tuvalu. .video is a plain generic extension that describes the medium. Prices are within a few pounds of each other on our list, so this is a meaning decision rather than a budget one.
Yes. There is no production credential, company registration or showreel to submit. The ICANN registry agreement carries an explicit commitment that second level registrations stay open to lawful registrants and that eligibility will not be limited by identity. Dog Beach, LLC operates it under Identity Digital, and the acceptable use policy that follows deals with phishing, malware, spam and trademark infringement rather than with what you have filmed.
It is neutral. Google takes no subject meaning from a generic extension, so the word video in the domain will not rank you for video searches on its own. The point that matters for a UK videographer is the one nobody mentions: a generic extension carries no country signal, while a .co.uk does in Google UK results. If your clients are all within an hour's drive, the .co.uk is the better main address and the .video is the memorable one beside it.
