Choosing between .photos, .photo and .photography
Three extensions in this family look interchangeable to a buyer and are not. .photos is plural and reads as a set. .photo is singular and reads as the medium or a single image. .photography names the craft and the person practising it. All three are open to anyone, we sell all three, and the annual prices sit close enough together that the decision should turn on meaning rather than money.
The plural suits delivery. Sending a client to smith.photos describes what is on the other end of the link before they click it, and that is a small but real courtesy when you are handing over a gallery of four hundred images. A portfolio is a different job. There you are selling the photographer rather than the pictures, and .photography carries that better.
The three registries are not even the same company. .photos and .photography both sit with Binky Moon, LLC under Identity Digital; .photo is operated by Registry Services, LLC. That matters less than it sounds, but it does mean the premium name lists, the launch policies and the abuse rules differ between siblings that look like a family.
Our steer for a UK photographer: the .co.uk is your front door, because that is what a client types after a wedding fair or a school newsletter. Put the galleries on the .photos and let the extension do the describing.
Is .photos the right choice for you?

.photos works well if
- You deliver client galleries and want the link to announce what is behind it, which matters when you send hundreds of them a year.
- You run a stock library or an image archive where sheer volume is the point, so the plural is doing real work.
- The .com went a decade ago and a padded replacement like getsmithphotos.com reads worse out loud than smith.photos does.
- Your business name already ends in a word that pairs neatly with the dot, so the whole address reads as one phrase.
Look elsewhere if
- The address is going on a van, a card and a shopfront. UK customers default to .co.uk and will mistype anything else more often.
- Price: roughly three times a .co.uk every year, to describe something a /galleries folder on your existing site describes for nothing.
- You shoot commercial work for agencies and art directors. For a portfolio, .photography names the profession and costs about the same.

.photos vs .photography: which should you register?
Same registry, same rules, same order of price, and the difference is entirely in what the word points at. .photography went into the root zone in November 2013, a month before .photos, and both moved into Binky Moon, LLC in the March 2018 consolidation.
Pick .photos when the site is the images: a gallery, a delivery link, an archive, a stock library. Pick .photography when the site is you: a portfolio, a rate card, an enquiry form, a business that happens to produce images. The plural describes the output and the longer word describes the practice.
One practical point in .photos favour: eleven characters against six. If the address will be read aloud at a wedding fair or spelt out over a bad phone line, the shorter one wins on that alone.

Ask us directlyYes. There is no eligibility test, no portfolio review and no requirement to be a working photographer. The ICANN registry agreement for .photos carries an explicit commitment that second level registrations stay open to lawful registrants and that the registry will not limit eligibility based on identity. The only real constraint afterwards is the Identity Digital acceptable use policy, which lets the registry suspend a name used for phishing, malware, spam or trademark infringement.
Choose .photos when the site is a collection of images and .photography when the site is about you. A wedding photographer delivering client galleries wants the plural, because the link describes its contents. The same photographer's portfolio and pricing site is better on .photography, which names the profession rather than the output. Prices are close enough that this should be a meaning decision, and plenty of studios register both and redirect one.
It is neutral, not bad. Google reads .photos as a generic extension and takes no subject meaning from it, so the word photos in your domain will not rank you for photography searches on its own. What it does not give you is the UK signal a .co.uk carries in Google UK results, which is the point that actually matters if your clients are all within an hour's drive. Your page titles and content still do the ranking work.
