Who runs .stream, and why reputation matters here
Before the branding argument, two facts about who you would be buying from. .stream entered the root zone on 26 February 2016, making it the youngest extension in this group, and IANA records the sponsoring organisation as dot Stream Limited of Gibraltar. Its administrative contact of record is at PricewaterhouseCoopers Ltd in Gibraltar rather than at the registry itself; GoDaddy Registry in Arizona is the technical contact and runs the nameservers. Registration is open. The ICANN agreement is a plain base agreement with no community policy and no public interest commitment restricting who may register, so there is nothing to prove and nothing to supply.
The awkward question a streamer should ask is whether they need a domain at all. Audiences find live content through Twitch, YouTube and TikTok, not by typing an address, and a channel URL is what gets shared. .tv is the country code extension for Tuvalu, used generically all over the world since the early 2000s, and that history is the point: people recognise it instantly and read it as broadcast. .stream is a ten year old generic extension that describes the delivery method rather than the medium, and it carries no such recognition.
Cost is close enough that it should not decide this. Recognition should. If you are selling to sponsors, agencies or corporate clients, .tv sounds like a channel and .stream sounds like a side project. If your audience is native to Twitch and Discord, that distinction matters less and the descriptive word may serve you better.
