The longer answer

When a .press domain beats a /press page

Most organisations asking about .press want somewhere to put press releases, and for most of them the answer is a page on the site they already have. A /press or /newsroom path inherits everything the main domain has earned in search. A separate .press starts from nothing and splits your coverage across two properties that then have to be maintained, secured and renewed separately. That is the default we would give a client, and we know it is the opposite of what a registrar normally says.

The extension earns its keep when press is the thing rather than a section of the thing. The Freedom of the Press Foundation publishes at freedom.press, and it works because the word is the mission. Newsrooms, press freedom organisations, independent titles and media-relations agencies are the buyers it was built for. Printers have a claim on it too, since a press was a machine long before it was a profession.

There is a pricing trap here that catches people. .press is run by Radix, whose published launch policy places selected names into pricing tiers, and those tiers can carry their own price for registration, transfer, redemption and renewal. A premium name can therefore renew at the premium figure every single year, not just cost more once. Check the renewal price, not the first-year price.

The extension has changed hands twice without anyone noticing. IANA delegated it to DotPress Inc. in May 2014, moved it to Radix FZC in August 2021 and to Radix Technologies Inc. in February 2024.

The honest answer

Is .press the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.press works well if

  • You are a newsroom, an independent title or a press freedom organisation, and the word describes the work rather than a page of the site.
  • You run a printing business and want the older sense of the word carrying the name, which no other extension gives you.
  • You are launching a publication, the .com went years ago, and a one-word .press beats a hyphenated compromise on a masthead.
  • You want a short address for a media kit that reporters will type off a phone screen while they are already on deadline.

Look elsewhere if

  • You just need somewhere for press releases. A /press page inherits your existing search history; a fresh domain starts at zero and stays there for months.
  • Price: around six times a .co.uk and roughly twice a .news, which makes it one of the dearer extensions in the media group.
  • You have your eye on a short, obvious name. Those are the ones most likely to sit in a Radix premium tier and renew at the premium price for ever.

Publishing news rather than issuing press releases? A .news costs less than half this and says the same thing to a reader. See .news pricing.

Head to head

.press vs .news: which should you register?

Different operators, different prices, and a difference in meaning that most buyers miss. .news is run by Dog Beach, LLC under Identity Digital and went into the root zone in March 2015. .press came a year earlier under DotPress and now sits with Radix.

.press is about the institution. It carries the sense of a press office, a press pass, the press as a body with a role. .news is about the output. It says this page contains today's stories. A local title covering one town is better served by .news; an organisation whose business is journalism as a practice reads better on .press.

Money decides plenty of these. .news costs less than half of .press annually on our list, and neither carries any advantage in Google, so if the two words read equally well for you, take the cheaper one and spend the difference on the site.

FAQ

.press domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .press domain.

Can't find what you're looking for?

Ask us directly

For most businesses, a page on your own site. A /press or /newsroom path inherits the authority the main domain has already built, keeps every release under one property, and costs nothing extra. A separate .press begins with no history and has to earn its own, while you now maintain two sites. Buy the .press when journalism is your business rather than a section of it, or when you want an address short enough for reporters to type from memory.

Yes. There is no press card to show, no publisher verification and no editorial test. The ICANN registry agreement for .press sets out the standard public interest commitments about abuse and accurate registration data, and imposes no eligibility criteria at all. Radix can suspend a name used for phishing, malware or trademark infringement, but nothing in the process asks whether you have ever published anything.

The registry prices it that way, and there is nothing technical behind the gap. .press runs at over twice a .news on our list, and both resolve identically, support the same records and get the same DNS management, email forwarding and free 10GB mailbox from us. If the two words read equally well for what you are naming, the cheaper one is the better buy, and you can always add the other later and redirect it.

It can, and this is the trap worth knowing before you order. Radix's published launch policy places selected names into pricing tiers, and a tier can set its own price for registration, transfer, redemption and renewal. That means a short or obvious name may cost the higher figure every year rather than once. Ask us to confirm the renewal price for the exact name you want before you commit, not just the first-year figure.
