The longer answer

Why .golf costs six times a .co.uk

Most golf clubs in Britain carry the word "golf" in their own name, which creates a small naming problem the day they buy a domain. The club name, plus "golf club", plus ".co.uk" runs long, and the part a visitor recognises ends up buried in the middle of it. A .golf domain moves that word out of the second level and into the extension, so the address becomes the club name and nothing else. That is the structural argument for it, and it is a fair one.

The extension went into the root zone on 12 March 2015, delegated at first to a company called Lone Falls, LLC. That name never meant anything. Donuts applied for its new generic extensions through hundreds of single-purpose companies, and in March 2018 IANA recorded the transfer of ".academy and 195 others" to Binky Moon, LLC in one go. Binky Moon is the registry of record today, under Identity Digital, on ICANN's standard base contract with no golf-specific conditions attached.

Price is where this one bites. At £63 a year it sits among the dearer extensions we sell, roughly six times a .co.uk, and that is a bill the club pays every year for as long as the website exists. For a committee working to a members' budget, ten years of the difference is a real number.

Our steer: if your income comes from members and green-fee visitors who find you by searching a place name, buy the .co.uk. A .golf earns its price when the brand is the sport rather than the location, so equipment makers, coaching businesses, tour operators, media titles, and the handful of clubs whose reputation already travels.

Unless ICANN lists a top-level domain as a country code top-level domain (ccTLD), Google will treat any TLD that resolves through the IANA DNS root zone as a gTLD.

What that means if you are buying one

So .golf carries no country signal whatsoever. If your members and visitors live within an hour of the clubhouse, that matters: a .co.uk tells Google where you are before it has read a word of the page. You can set a country target for a generic extension in Search Console, but that is a setting somebody has to remember, not something the address does on its own.

The honest answer

Is .golf the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.golf works well if

  • Your brand is the sport rather than a place. Equipment makers, coaching businesses, golf media and tour operators all read correctly on .golf.
  • The .co.uk you wanted needs the words "golf club" bolted on to be available, and you would rather have the shorter address.
  • You sell to visiting golfers from outside the UK, so a country extension would narrow you rather than help you.
  • You need the extension to do the explaining on a scorecard, a range banner or a car park sign, where there is no room for a strapline.

Look elsewhere if

  • Your income comes from members and green-fee visitors within an hour of the clubhouse. Local search is the traffic you need, and .golf gives Google no UK signal.
  • Renewal cost matters. At £63 a year against £9.99 for a .co.uk, you pay several hundred pounds more over a decade for exactly the same website.
  • Your members already type the club name followed by .co.uk. Retraining an established membership takes longer than the shorter address saves.

Most UK clubs do better on a .co.uk, which carries a UK signal in search and costs a fraction of this. See .co.uk pricing.

Head to head

.golf vs .com: which should you register?

A golf brand with ambitions beyond one county is usually choosing between a long .com and a short .golf, because the two-word .com in this sector went years ago. The trade-off is not subtle: .com is what people type without thinking, and .golf tells them the subject before they read anything else.

The cost gap is wide enough to matter to a small business. A .com renews at £15.49 here and a .golf at £63.00, so over ten years you are comparing roughly £155 with roughly £630 for the same website on a different address. That is a fair price for the right brand and a poor one for a village club.

If it comes down to a coin toss, buy the .com and add the .golf later. Redirecting the specific one at the general one is easy. Unpicking it the other way round after you have printed stationery is not.

FAQ

.golf domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .golf domain.

Can't find what you're looking for?

Ask us directly

No. ICANN records the .golf registry agreement as a base, non-sponsored contract, which means there is no charter, no sponsoring body and no verification of who you are or what you do. Anyone anywhere can register one. The flip side is the part clubs forget: nothing stops somebody else registering your club name on .golf either, so if the name matters to you, the time to take it is before somebody asks you about it.

The registry sets the wholesale price, and sector extensions like this one are priced on the assumption the buyer is a business rather than an individual. Nothing is technically different about a .golf: the DNS records, the DNSSEC support and the mail routing are identical to a £9.99 domain. Check the renewal figure as well as the first year, because the price recurs annually for the life of the registration.

Having the word golf to the right of the dot is not a ranking factor. What moves a club up the local results is a Google Business Profile in the right category, matching name, address and phone details everywhere they appear, real reviews, and a page for each thing you sell, from memberships to society days. A .golf also carries no country signal, so if anything it gives away a small advantage a .co.uk would have handed you in UK results.

Yes, and for most clubs that is the sensible order. Keep the .co.uk as the address on your letterhead and in Google, register the .golf, and point it at the main site with a redirect so links and email keep working. Both renew separately, so budget for two annual bills. Every domain here includes DNS management, email forwarding and one free 10GB mailbox, so the second name costs you the registration fee and nothing beyond it.
