Bingo halls, online bingo and the licence small print

Bingo is two words wearing one coat. There is the game, which in Britain runs from commercial halls down to a Tuesday night in a social club, and there is the exclamation, which is why the extension turns up on competition sites, quiz apps and the occasional joke. The registry does not mind which you had in mind.

What its ICANN contract does mind is credentials. .bingo carries the same sector safeguards as the other gambling extensions: the registration terms must include your representation that you hold whatever licences the sector requires, and a duty to report changes to them. Nothing is checked at the point of sale, so the risk arrives later rather than at checkout. Binky Moon operates it and it was delegated in January 2015.

The British split is worth knowing before you buy. Remote gambling advertised to consumers in Britain needs an operating licence from the Gambling Commission. Low-level gambling in pubs, clubs and similar venues is handled instead by local licensing authorities, through permits and registrations. A charity bingo night and an online bingo product are not the same regulatory animal, and only one of them is a Commission matter.

Eligibility

Who is allowed to register .bingo?

Anyone can register a .bingo, but the registration terms require you to hold whatever gambling authorisations your activity needs and to report any change to them.

Nothing checked at checkout
No evidence is requested and no application is reviewed before the domain is issued. The obligation lives in the registration agreement you accept, not in a gate you have to pass.
The credentials clause
Specification 11 of the .bingo registry agreement requires registrars to include a term in which the registrant represents that it possesses any necessary authorisations, charters, licences or related credentials for the sector, and reports material changes to them.
Who licenses what in Britain
The Gambling Commission licenses remote gambling advertised to consumers in Britain. Local licensing authorities deal with lottery registrations and gambling permits for pubs, clubs and other venues running low-level gambling.
If you do not hold them
Identity Digital lists holding yourself out as having a credential you do not have among the abusive uses in its acceptable use policy, and reserves the right to deny, suspend, cancel, redirect or transfer any registration. A domain in that state is a website that stops working.

The honest answer

Is .bingo the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.bingo works well if

  • You run a licensed online bingo product and want an address that says the game before the page has finished loading.
  • You operate a hall or a club night and your name plus .bingo is shorter and clearer than the same name plus a .co.uk.
  • You are building a brand around the exclamation rather than the game, for example a prize draw or a quiz app.

Look elsewhere if

  • You have not settled the licensing question. The registration terms ask you to represent that you hold what your activity requires, before you know whether you do.
  • At roughly four and a half times a .co.uk each year, it is a heavy annual cost for a fundraiser or a club that trades a few nights a month.
  • The word is fixed and cheerful. If the venue later becomes a general entertainment or events business, the address stops describing it.

Running a club night or a charity fundraiser? A .co.uk costs a fraction of this and asks nothing of your licensing position. See .co.uk pricing.

Head to head

.bingo vs .bet: which should you register?

Both sit under the same sector safeguards, so the regulatory homework is identical. The difference is scope. A .bet covers the whole of sports betting and reads as a category; a .bingo names one game and reads as a venue. Anything you build on .bingo is committed to bingo in a way a .bet never commits you to a single sport.

Price splits them too, with .bingo costing roughly twice a .bet on our list. If you are running one product, the specific word is the stronger address and worth the difference. If you expect to add slots, casino or sportsbook alongside it, start with the broader name and keep the bingo brand at the second level instead.

If you provide facilities for remote gambling and advertise to consumers in Britain, the Gambling Commission requires an operating licence from it, and the domain makes no difference either way. The extension adds a contractual layer on top: the .bingo registration terms include your representation that you hold whatever credentials the sector requires. Community and charity bingo held in a venue is usually a matter for your local licensing authority rather than the Commission.

Yes, registration is open and nothing is verified at purchase. Two practical points before you do. The annual cost is roughly four and a half times a .co.uk, which is a lot for an organisation running a handful of nights a year. And the credential representation in the registration terms still applies to you, so satisfy yourself about your local licensing position first, then buy the domain rather than the other way round.

No. Bingo also works as an exclamation meaning found it, and the extension gets used for quizzes, prize draws, competitions and internal tools where nothing is being wagered. The registry places no use restriction on it. Be aware that the address will still be read as gambling by a fair number of visitors, filters and advertising reviewers, so if your product has nothing to do with the game you may spend time explaining it.
