About Piwigo

What is Piwigo?

Piwigo is a free, open-source photo gallery application written in PHP, licensed under the GPL, and originally launched in 2002 by a French developer community. It is built for photographers, museums, clubs, and businesses who want to host their own image collections rather than rely on services like SmugMug, Flickr, or Adobe Portfolio.

The application handles uploads, albums, batch tagging, EXIF and IPTC metadata extraction, multi-user permissions, and full-text search across image titles, descriptions, and tags. Theming is templated and a plugin directory adds features such as watermarking, RAW preview, video support, and integrations with desktop tools like Lightroom and digiKam.

Piwigo runs on a standard LAMP stack with PHP and MySQL or MariaDB. The codebase scales to libraries of hundreds of thousands of images on modest hardware, provided the file storage and database are tuned correctly. Mobile apps for iOS and Android are available for upload and browsing.

Our take

365i’s editorial review of Piwigo

Piwigo is one of those quietly excellent open-source applications that almost no one outside the photography community has heard of, and that is a shame. It has been in active development since 2002, the French maintainers ship updates regularly, and for a self-hosted photo gallery I genuinely cannot think of a better option in 2026.

I tend to see it picked by two groups. The first is photographers who have done the maths on a SmugMug or Adobe Portfolio subscription, realised they are paying £180 to £350 a year forever for what is effectively a CMS plus image hosting, and decided they would rather own the URL. The second is small clubs, museums, and local-history societies with a long-running image archive who do not want their content sitting on a US service that might pivot or shut down.

"Piwigo is the cleanest answer to self-hosted photo galleries I have hosted. The mobile upload UX is the only place a managed service like SmugMug genuinely beats it, and most photographers do not upload from a phone."

Mark McNeece, Founder, 365i Hosting

Where it works well: metadata handling is the best in the open-source category by some distance. EXIF, IPTC, and XMP all get pulled in on upload and become searchable tags automatically. Multi-user permissions are granular enough for a club with a committee or a museum with multiple curators. The plugin directory covers most needs, and watermarking, video playback, and RAW preview all work without drama. Performance on libraries up to about 50,000 images on our standard web hosting plan is fine, provided you pre-generate thumbnails rather than letting them build on first request.

Where it annoys me: the default theme is functional but plain, and theming Piwigo properly takes more effort than theming a WordPress site. The mobile upload experience through the official app works but is not as polished as SmugMug or Apple Photos. And the admin UI, while consistent, has the slightly-1990s feel that most long-lived open source projects share.

If you are a photographer, club, or institution sitting on a six-figure annual SmugMug bill across multiple users, Piwigo on our standard web hosting plan plus a £6 domain is a much better answer. If you upload exclusively from a phone and value design polish over ownership, stick with the managed service.

Where Piwigo Fits

Best for

Independent photographers, camera clubs, museums, and local-history societies who want to own their image archive rather than rent it from SmugMug or Adobe Portfolio. Particularly strong for libraries between 5,000 and 50,000 images with serious metadata needs (searchable EXIF, IPTC, custom tags). Runs comfortably on our standard web hosting plan with PHP upload limits raised to 256 MB and imagick enabled.

Watch for

The default theme is plain and theming Piwigo takes more effort than theming WordPress, so budget design time if presentation matters. Mobile upload through the official app works but is not as smooth as SmugMug or Apple Photos. Plugin directory is healthy but smaller than WordPress, so check niche integrations exist before committing. Libraries above roughly 100,000 images need a managed cloud server with NVMe storage rather than shared hosting.

A Piwigo case from our books

A South-West camera club with around 60 members and an 18-year photo archive (just over 22,000 images) came to us in early 2026 after their long-time SmugMug subscription went up to £290 a year and the club committee wanted to bring everything in-house. They had IT skills inside the membership but no hosting experience, so we set them up on our standard web hosting plan at £5.99 a month with Piwigo pre-installed, raised PHP upload limits to 256 MB, and helped them export and re-import the SmugMug library across two evenings.

The archive landed cleanly with all EXIF and tag data intact, full-text search across descriptions worked from day one, and the gallery is now reachable on a club-owned domain with no external dependencies. Annual cost dropped from £290 to £72 plus the domain.

What we would tell anyone in the same spot: do the migration during a quiet month, and pre-generate all thumbnails after import rather than letting Piwigo build them on first hit. Saves a load of one-off slow page loads.

Anonymised at the client's request. Industry, scale, and timeline preserved.

Hosting Gallery apps

What we look for in gallery hosting

Photo galleries trip on PHP upload limits, file storage, and on-the-fly thumbnail generation. We raise upload_max_filesize and post_max_size to 256MB on install for any gallery app, recommend pre-generating thumbnails on import rather than letting the application build them on first request, and set sensible cache headers so popular albums do not regenerate the same thumbnail twice. For libraries above 100,000 images, NVMe storage on a managed cloud server changes the experience more than any application tuning.

FAQ

Piwigo Hosting FAQ

Common questions we hear from people running Piwigo on our hosting.

Piwigo needs PHP 7.4 or higher (PHP 8.1+ recommended), MySQL 5.5 or MariaDB 10.x, and the gd or imagick PHP extension for thumbnail generation. The exif and mbstring extensions are needed for metadata reading and Unicode handling. We host every plan on PHP 8.3 by default with imagick enabled, so you can install Piwigo and start uploading the same hour.

Piwigo is a one-click install on our web hosting plans. From the My365i control panel, open Software Installer, search for Piwigo, pick the domain you want it on, and click Install. The installer creates the database, sets file permissions, and gives you an admin login. You then upload photos through the web admin, the desktop pLoader tool, or the official mobile app.

Piwigo handles libraries up to roughly 50,000 images on our standard web hosting plan without issues, provided thumbnails are pre-generated rather than created on first request. Beyond that, the bottleneck is usually file system I/O and database performance during search rather than PHP itself. For libraries above 100,000 images, or for galleries pushing a lot of full-resolution downloads, a small managed cloud server with NVMe storage and dedicated database resources is the sensible step up.

Our support covers the hosting platform: PHP and MySQL configuration, file uploads, SSL, backups, and migrations. For Piwigo-specific questions like custom theme tweaks, plugin development, or integrating with Lightroom, we will help where we can but do not act as your Piwigo developer. The most common issue we resolve is PHP upload limits, which is firmly hosting-side and we tune that for you.

Yes. We set PHP upload_max_filesize and post_max_size to 256 MB by default, which covers most RAW files and short video clips. If you regularly need to upload larger files, we can raise that on request, or you can use the desktop pLoader tool which uploads directly via FTP and bypasses PHP upload limits entirely. For video, install the Piwigo VideoJS plugin which handles MP4 playback in the gallery itself.

Piwigo is self-hosted and free of subscription fees: hosting plus your domain runs to about £6 a month with us, against roughly £15 to £30 per month for the equivalent SmugMug or Adobe Portfolio plan. You own the data and the URL outright, and there is no platform risk if a service changes its terms. What you give up is the polish of a managed product: theme variety is smaller, mobile upload UX is good but not best-in-class, and you are responsible for keeping the install patched. For photographers who value ownership and long-term cost control, the trade-off is firmly worth it.
