What is a .vegas domain?

The .vegas domain is the city-level TLD for Las Vegas, Nevada. Managed by Dot Vegas Inc., it's backed by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. Few city names carry as much instant recognition as Vegas. The extension is open to anyone worldwide, though it resonates most with businesses in entertainment, hospitality, events, and tourism. If your business has anything to do with Las Vegas, this domain says it immediately.

Who should register .vegas?

Las Vegas hotels and casinos, event companies, entertainment brands, wedding planners, and tourism operators with Vegas connections.

What a .vegas domain signals, and what it costs

Very few place names work as a single word. Vegas is one. You do not need to say Las, you do not need to say Nevada, and nobody asks which country. That recognition is what the extension sells, and the registry is candid that it sells it to everyone: the general registration policy states that anyone, anywhere in the world, is qualified and eligible to register a .vegas domain name, and that there are no nexus requirements attached.

General availability opened at 19:00 UTC on 15 September 2014, run by Dot Vegas, Inc., a Nevada corporation whose bid was endorsed by the city. Two rules are worth reading before you plan a name. The minimum is three characters, which rules out the two letter puns people reach for first, and premium names carry a restriction on transferring them for the greater of twelve months or the initial registration term.

The catch is the annual cost. A .vegas runs several times a .co.uk every year and, unlike a country code, does nothing for search visibility anywhere. This is a marketing decision, so judge it as one. It works where the word is the product: a wedding chapel, an events company, a show, a bar crawl, a photographer who shoots on the Strip. It works badly as the permanent address of a business whose connection to the city is that the founder enjoyed a holiday there, because an extension that makes a claim about location invites somebody to check it. If you are UK based and Vegas is a theme rather than an address, register the .co.uk first and let the .vegas be the campaign.

The honest answer

Is .vegas the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.vegas works well if

  • Your business is physically in Las Vegas and the city is the first thing a customer needs to know about you.
  • You run weddings, shows, events or hospitality where Vegas is the product and the name can carry it on its own.
  • You want a campaign address that reads like a headline, and you know it is a campaign rather than a decade long commitment.
  • You already trade under a name containing Vegas and would rather hold the matching extension than watch a competitor use it.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost matters. This is one of the pricier extensions we sell, it recurs every year, and what it buys is recognition rather than reach.
  • You are a UK business with no Las Vegas connection. The ending makes a claim about location, and a customer who checks will find it does not hold.
  • You had a short pun in mind. The minimum is three characters, and premium names cannot be moved on for at least the first twelve months.

UK business using Vegas as a theme? Register the .co.uk as your real address and point the .vegas at it for the campaign. See .co.uk pricing.

Head to head

.vegas vs .com: which should you register?

A .com tells a visitor nothing except that you exist. A .vegas tells them where, in one word, before they read a line of your copy. If the where is the reason people buy from you, that is a real advantage and no generic extension replicates it.

Against that, .com is what people type when they half remember an address, it costs a fraction of the price every year, and it makes no claim that can be checked and found wanting. A .vegas asks you to be about Vegas, on the record, for as long as you hold it.

Most businesses that use one well hold both: the .com as the permanent address and the .vegas as the one printed on the flyer, redirecting to the same site. That way the annual cost is a marketing line rather than the foundation of the business.

.vegas domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .vegas domain.

Can't find what you're looking for?

No. The registry policy says anyone, anywhere in the world, is qualified and eligible to register a .vegas domain name, and that there are no nexus requirements. There is no address check, no business licence to produce and no Nevada connection to evidence. Whether you should is a separate question: the extension makes a geographic claim, and customers who cannot square it with your address will draw their own conclusions.

It is a small city extension with a strong word, and the registry prices it accordingly. Nothing technical differs: the DNS, the records and the DNSSEC support are the same as any other extension you could buy for a tenth of the money. Check the price on this page against a .co.uk, then multiply by the number of years you expect to trade, because the gap is the number that matters rather than the first invoice.

It is neutral. Search engines treat it as a generic extension, so it carries no geographic weight for Las Vegas the way a country code carries weight for its country. Ranking for Vegas searches comes from a Google Business Profile with a real Nevada address, local links and pages about what you actually do there. The domain can reinforce a brand people already know; it will not put you in a local pack on its own.

Not under the registry policy as published, which sets a minimum of three characters for a .vegas name unless the registry varies that itself. Short names that do exist are often premium priced, and premium registrations come with a restriction on transferring the name for the greater of twelve months or the initial registration term. Check both points before you build a campaign around a specific short name.
