Who can actually register a .si domain
Plenty of resellers will tell you a .si needs an address in the EU or the EEA. Arnes, the registry, does not say that anywhere. The general terms and conditions that govern every .si registration, in force since 15 November 2024, define a domain name holder as a natural or legal person who registers a domain name, and attach no nationality, residency or establishment test to it at all. Manchester, Melbourne or Maribor, the door is the same one.
Knowing who Arnes is explains the tone of those rules. It is the Academic and Research Network of Slovenia, a public institution set up in 1992, and running .si sits alongside operating the national research network rather than being a business in its own right. Registration is automated and first come, first served, periods run from one to five years, and a short list of names is held back for the state: 112.si for civil protection, 113.si for the police.
Two clauses are worth reading before you buy. Expiry is brisk. An unrenewed name goes into quarantine, which pulls it out of the .si zone so the website and the email stop that day, and quarantine cannot run longer than thirty days before the name is deleted and back on sale. Nothing sits behind it. The second is personal data. Holders agree that their details are published in the WHOIS service to the extent the registry rules require, and clause 11.3 goes further: a holder who exercises the right to have that data deleted has every domain they hold deleted with it. Register in a name that can live with being on the record, and put the renewal date somewhere you will see it.
Is .si the right choice for you?

.si works well if
- You trade in Slovenia and want the address Slovenian customers read as local, which is the one thing a .com cannot buy you there.
- You run Alpine tourism, outdoor or hospitality services and your bookings come from Slovenia and the countries around it.
- You have a Slovenian subsidiary or partner firm and want that entity to have a proper address rather than a subfolder on head office.
- You want a European market address but do not qualify for a .eu, because Arnes asks nothing about where you are established.
Look elsewhere if
- Your customers are mainly British. A .si sends a Slovenian signal and does nothing in Google UK, where a .co.uk costs a fraction of the price.
- You want a novelty hack out of the letters s and i. Slovenian buyers read the ending as a business address for their own country, which is not the joke you were going for.
- You are relaxed about renewal dates. Thirty days of quarantine is the whole safety net, and after that the name goes back on sale to anybody.

.si vs .eu: which should you register?
Both extensions point at Europe and they answer different questions. A .eu says you are established somewhere in the Union. A .si says you are in Slovenia, which is narrower and, to a Slovenian audience, more useful.
For a British reader the blunt difference is eligibility. Since the transition period ended on 31 December 2020, a UK organisation with no EU establishment and no qualifying citizenship cannot hold a .eu, and EURid suspended and then withdrew the domains of registrants who stopped qualifying. Arnes applies no such test. A .si is open to a UK registrant on exactly the terms it is open to a Slovenian one.
If you want a single address for the whole single market and you qualify, .eu is the better shape and the cheaper one. If Slovenia is the market, .si wins on local trust, and nobody can take it off you because your registrant status changed.

Ask us directlyNo. The Arnes general terms and conditions define a domain name holder as a natural or legal person who registers a domain name, with no nationality, residency or establishment requirement anywhere in the document. Third party summaries claiming an EU or EEA presence rule are wrong, and the registry text in force since 15 November 2024 is the one to check. A UK company, a UK resident and a company registered anywhere else can all hold one.
It stops working the day it expires. Arnes puts an unrenewed name into quarantine, which removes the pointers from the .si nameservers, so the website and the email go down at once rather than degrading quietly. Quarantine cannot last more than thirty days. Renew inside that window and the name is reactivated; miss it and the domain is deleted and available for anyone to register. There is no long redemption period to buy your way back afterwards.
It works for Slovenia and not much else. Search engines read a country code as a geographic signal, which helps you inside that country and gives you nothing in Google UK results. If you want to rank in Britain, the .co.uk is the tool for that job and it costs a fraction of the price. Register a .si because Slovenian customers are worth having, not as a general purpose alternative to a .com.
Not for free, and there is a clause behind that worth knowing. Holders agree that their personal data is published in the WHOIS service to the extent the registry rules require, and clause 11.3 of the general terms says that if a holder asks Arnes to delete their personal data, Arnes deletes every domain registered to them.
