What is a .shop.pl domain?

The .shop.pl extension is a subdomain within Poland's .pl namespace, specifically aimed at online shops and e-commerce businesses. Managed by NASK, it gives Polish retailers a web address that tells customers exactly what to expect: an online store. Poland's e-commerce market is growing rapidly, with Polish consumers increasingly comfortable buying online. A .shop.pl domain cuts straight to the point.

shop.pl or sklep.pl: the Polish e-commerce choice

NASK maintains two shop-shaped functional domains under .pl, and the one most Poles would reach for is not this one. Its published list of functional domains carries both shop.pl and sklep.pl, and sklep is simply the Polish word for shop. If your site is in Polish and your customers are Polish, sklep.pl is the word they already know.

That does not make shop.pl a bad buy. English retail vocabulary is widely understood in Poland, shop.pl reads cleanly to a bilingual audience and to anyone arriving from an English-language advert, and it is the version an international brand can put in a press release without explaining. The choice is about who is doing the typing.

The mechanics are the same as any .pl. No residency test, no company registration to prove, no trading licence to show: NASK's regulations set out no eligibility criteria at all. Names take Latin letters, digits and hyphens up to sixty-three characters, and Polish diacritics are available as internationalised names. Transfers only complete when the registrant clicks a confirmation link sent to the address held in the .pl registry, so keep that address alive.

The honest answer

Is .shop.pl the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.shop.pl works well if

  • You run a Polish-language online shop and want the extension to say what the site is before anyone reads a word of it.
  • You are a UK retailer opening a Polish storefront and want a local address without registering a Polish company first.
  • Your brand is English and your Polish customers already meet it in English, so shop.pl reads naturally rather than translated.

Look elsewhere if

  • Your customers are Polish speakers who would search for sklep. NASK sells sklep.pl too, and that is the word they actually use.
  • You want one address for several markets. A shop.pl pins you to Poland, and a .shop or a .com does not.
  • You will read it aloud in Poland. Explaining an English word plus a Polish country code down a phone line is slower than it sounds.

Selling across several countries rather than into Poland? A .shop works everywhere and needs no local knowledge. See .shop pricing.

Head to head

.shop.pl vs .shop: which should you register?

A .shop is a global retail extension with no country attached, available to anyone, and understood on sight in most markets. A shop.pl is a Polish registration that names the category and the country at once. Both are honest about being a shop; only one is honest about being Polish.

Compare the two prices on this site before deciding, because the local option is not automatically the dearer one. Then weigh reach. A .shop covers every market you sell to from a single registration, while a country-by-country approach means a separate domain, a separate renewal and a separate set of registry rules for each one. Most retailers should pick one primary address and add local endings only where the language of the site actually changes.

Ask us directly

sklep.pl if the site is in Polish, shop.pl if your brand and marketing are in English. NASK lists both as functional domains under .pl, and sklep is the Polish word for shop, so a Polish-speaking customer typing from memory is likelier to reach for it. shop.pl earns its place when the brand itself is English, when you advertise to a bilingual audience, or when the sklep.pl version of your name has already gone.

No. The .pl Domain Name Regulations impose no residency, nationality or corporate test, and they deal explicitly with subscribers whose home or registered office sits outside Poland. You do not need a Polish VAT number, a Polish address or a local agent. What you do need is a monitored email address on the registry record, because a .pl transfer only completes when the registrant clicks a confirmation link sent to that address.

It gives Google a Polish signal that a generic extension does not, which is worth having if Polish shoppers are the audience. It is not a ranking shortcut. The country ending helps Google work out which market a site is aimed at, while the ranking itself still comes from the usual work: Polish-language content, a fast site, real reviews and links from Polish sources. Treat the domain as one signal among many rather than a substitute for the rest.
