The .ro data check that can suspend your domain
The thing most likely to cost you a .ro is not eligibility, it is an unread email. RoTLD publishes a registration data verification policy sitting on top of Romanian law and the GDPR, and it reserves the right to check the validity of your details before a domain is activated and at any point afterwards, either on a third party's complaint or on its own initiative.
The process is specific. A notice goes to the contact address on the record. You then sign in to the administration panel at rotld.ro, check the declared data, correct it where needed, and upload a document confirming it through the data validation option. Miss the deadline in that notice and the domain is suspended and scheduled for deletion. RoTLD says outright that a suspended .ro stops working precisely so the holder notices something is wrong. While it is suspended you may still correct the data but you cannot renew, and once it is deleted the name goes back to first come, first served.
Eligibility itself is wide open. Rule 9 of the registration rules says any legal or natural person may register names under .ro whatever country they are in, with the caveat that the person named as contact should be an employee of the company holding the name. Second levels carry stated purposes: com.ro for commercial use, org.ro for non-profit and civic bodies, nom.ro for personal names, and tm.ro only for registered trade marks, with evidence required from OSIM or another trade mark registry.
The fix for all of this is dull and effective. Point the registrant contact at a monitored shared mailbox rather than at whoever happened to build the site.

- Rule 9 of the registration rules allows any legal or natural person to register under .ro regardless of the country they are in, with no Romanian company, address or local contact requirement. The person listed as contact on the form is expected to be an employee of the organisation holding the name.
- Data must stay accurate
- Holders and accredited partners must supply exact and complete data at registration and keep it updated. RoTLD can verify it before the domain is activated and at any point during its life, on a third party's complaint or on its own initiative.
- What you must supply
- When a check is opened, a notice goes to the contact email on the record. You sign in to the administration panel at rotld.ro, verify or correct the data, and submit a document confirming it through the data validation option in that panel.
- Second levels with conditions
- tm.ro is limited to registered trade marks and asks for evidence from OSIM or another trade mark registry. com.ro, org.ro, nom.ro, store.ro and the rest each carry a stated purpose in the rules, even though the direct .ro is open to everyone.
- If you miss the deadline
- The domain is suspended and scheduled for deletion, and a suspended .ro stops resolving, so the website and the email both go down. During suspension you can still correct the data but you cannot renew, and once it is deleted anyone may register the name.

Is .ro the right choice for you?

.ro works well if
- You sell to Romanian consumers and want the extension they filter for, without needing a Romanian company to get it.
- You run a development or support team in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca or Iasi and want a recruitment site that reads as local rather than as an overseas agency.
- You already hold the .com and want a Romanian country site with Romanian-language content and local payment options behind it.
- You want a ccTLD a UK entity can hold outright, at a point when .eu no longer allows that.
Look elsewhere if
- Nobody owns the domain admin mailbox. A verification notice nobody reads ends with a live site suspended and then deleted, which is how most .ro names are lost.
- Price is the deciding factor. A .ro is roughly four times the annual cost of a .co.uk and buys you nothing outside Romania.
- You want a trade mark name under tm.ro without holding a registered mark. That second level asks for evidence from a trade mark registry, so there is no way through without one.

.ro vs .eu: which should you register?
These two look like alternatives for reaching eastern Europe and they are not comparable at all, because one of them is closed to most British buyers. A UK-established company with no EU establishment and no qualifying citizenship cannot hold a .eu. It can hold a .ro this afternoon.
.ro is the narrower and more available choice. It names one country, it is open to anyone anywhere, and Romanian shoppers read it as a local seller. .eu is broader and conditional. It covers the single market rather than a country, but eligibility is written into EU regulation, and UK registrants have been outside the criteria since the transition period ended on 31 December 2020.
For a British business with Romanian customers or a Romanian development team, the practical answer is a .ro alongside your existing .co.uk or .com. Revisit .eu only if you open an entity inside the Union, or if a qualifying individual in the business holds citizenship of a member state.

Both sit under the same registration rules and the same data verification policy, so nothing about the compliance burden changes between them. Availability and how easy the name is to say are the real deciders.
No. There is no local presence test of any kind, which puts .ro at the open end of the European ccTLDs alongside .pl and .se rather than with .no. What you do need is a registration record that survives scrutiny: a real registrant name, a real address and, above all, a contact email somebody monitors, because that address is where a verification notice lands and missing it costs you the domain rather than a warning letter.
