Why .org.nz is open when .org.au is not
Set .org.nz beside .org.au and the difference is the whole page. Australia demands a not-for-profit entity and a continuing Australian presence before it will issue a licence. New Zealand asks for neither. .org.nz sits in the unmoderated group of the .nz namespace, and the .nz Rules state that any available domain name can be registered on a first come, first served basis.
Only six second levels are moderated: .cri.nz, .govt.nz, .health.nz, .iwi.nz, .mil.nz and .parliament.nz. Everything else, .org.nz included, is open, and rule 1.2 says no new second level domains will ever be created, so that split is now permanent. The Rules also say plainly that InternetNZ is not concerned with the use of a .nz domain name.
For a charity that has a practical consequence. The extension is a signal you have chosen to send rather than a status a registry has granted, so publish your registration number and a link to your entry on the public charities register, and let those do the verifying. Supporters who assume a .org.nz has been vetted are assuming something the Rules never promised, and it is better that your own page corrects them than that a copycat exploits it.
One more thing worth knowing before you order. The Privacy Option in the .nz Rules is open only to an individual who does not intend to use the name to any significant extent in trade. An incorporated society or a charitable trust cannot use it, so the organisation's contact details sit in the public register.
A New Zealand community group should hold the .org.nz. A UK charity with no New Zealand operation gets more from the .org, which costs less and travels further.
Is .org.nz the right choice for you?

- You are a New Zealand charity, incorporated society, sports club or community group, and .org.nz is the address supporters already expect.
- You want the non-commercial reading without an eligibility process, because the equivalent Australian and British extensions both impose one.
- You are an international NGO with New Zealand programmes and no local entity. Nothing here requires one, so you can hold the name in your own organisation's name.
- The .co.nz has gone to a business with a similar name and you would rather be clearly the not-for-profit than be the hyphenated version of them.
Look elsewhere if
- You want the domain itself to prove your status. It proves nothing, because there is no eligibility check, and a copycat can register a near-identical .org.nz the same afternoon.
- Your donors are British. A .org.nz carries a New Zealand signal that works against you in UK search, and .org.uk costs a fraction of it.
- You are trying to hold down running costs. Holding .org.nz and .co.nz together doubles a bill that recurs every year for the life of the organisation.

.org.nz vs .org: which should you register?
Neither of these verifies anything about you, which surprises people about both. The difference is reach against locality. A .org is understood by every English-speaking donor on earth and belongs to no country. A .org.nz says New Zealand before anyone reads a word.
Pick .org.nz when your work, your volunteers and your funding are in New Zealand, because the country signal helps in local search and reassures a local supporter that you are not an overseas operation collecting donations. Pick .org when your supporters are spread across countries, when you need one address for grant applications in several jurisdictions, or when the recurring cost matters, because a .org is cheaper to hold year after year.
An organisation with a real New Zealand programme and a wider footprint usually ends up with both, the .org as the permanent home and the .org.nz pointing at the New Zealand pages. That is a sound arrangement as long as somebody owns the renewal for each.

The remaining second levels, including .org.nz, .co.nz and .net.nz, are open. Rule 1.2 of the .nz Rules also confirms that no new second level domains will be created, so this list is not going to grow.
Register both only if your name is generic enough for somebody else to want it. Neither extension is checked, so the one you leave is available to anyone the same afternoon, including a business with a similar name. Set against that, the second registration doubles a bill that recurs every year for as long as the organisation exists, and buys nothing a supporter will ever notice. For a distinctive name, one is enough and the money is better spent elsewhere.
