What is a .org.in domain?
The .org.in extension serves organisations and non-profits within India's .in namespace, managed by NIXI (the National Internet Exchange of India). India has over 800 million internet users, making it the second-largest online market in the world. For charities, NGOs, and community groups working in India, .org.in provides instant recognition of non-commercial intent. Registration is open to organisations worldwide, on two conditions that catch people out: WHOIS privacy and proxy services are banned, so registrant details are public, and KYC is mandatory under the CERT-In directions.

Why WHOIS privacy is banned on .org.in
Start with the rule that catches people out. Clause 3 of the .IN Registry's terms for registrants reads: any kind of proxy services are not allowed, and if the data is wrong or masked out by any proxy or privilege protection services, the registrant shall not be recognised as the owner of the domain name. Buy WHOIS privacy on an .org.in and you are not buying protection, you are risking your claim to the name.
Everything else is easier. India's Domain Name Policy Framework opened unlimited third-level registration to the public in popular zones including .co.in, .net.in and .org.in, keeping .gov.in, .mil.in, .ac.in and .edu.in for government, defence and education. There is no non-profit test on .org.in and no Indian address requirement. One and two character names are reserved by government and NIXI order, so three characters is the floor, and the registry can deny or suspend a name that conflicts with sovereign national interest or public order.
Two operational notes. Identity verification is mandatory under CERT-In guidelines, so expect to prove who you are. And a disputed .org.in goes to INDRP arbitration under India's Arbitration and Conciliation Act 1996, not to a court you would recognise.
Who is allowed to register .org.in?

- The .IN Registry terms state that any kind of proxy service is not allowed, and that a registrant whose data is wrong or masked by a proxy or privacy service will not be recognised as the owner of the domain. This is a rule about the domain, not a preference your registrar can waive.
- Identity checks are mandatory
- NIXI requires know-your-customer verification of registrants, following CERT-In guidelines issued under section 70B of India's Information Technology Act 2000.
- Minimum three characters
- All one-character and two-character domains are reserved by government and NIXI order and are not available to the public, at the second level or the third.
- If you do not comply
- Providing inaccurate or masked registrant data is treated as a material breach and a basis for cancelling the registration. The registry also reserves the right to deny, cancel, suspend or lock any name that conflicts with sovereign national interest or public order, and to freeze a name while a dispute runs.

Look elsewhere if
- You need registrant details kept off the public record. .org.in bans privacy services and treats masked data as grounds for losing the name.
- You have no India connection and no plan to build one. A plain .org costs about the same here and travels everywhere.
- You want a short name. One and two character labels are reserved, and the good three-letter combinations went years ago.

.org.in vs .org: which should you register?
A .org is the global default for non-commercial bodies and asks nothing of you: no country, no identity check, no ban on privacy protection. An .org.in asks for all three, and gives back a country signal that only pays off if your audience is in India.
Run the test that way round. If your supporters, donors or beneficiaries search from India, the .in ending earns its keep in local results and in recognition. If they are spread across the world, the .org.in adds a geographic claim you do not need and a WHOIS exposure you may not want. Plenty of organisations hold both, with the .org as the working address and the .org.in redirecting to it.

No. India's Domain Name Policy Framework opened third-level zones including .co.in, .net.in and .org.in to unlimited public registration, and there is no residency, incorporation or charitable-status test. Only .gov.in, .mil.in, .ac.in and .edu.in are reserved, for government, defence and educational institutions. NIXI does keep the right to deny or suspend any registration conflicting with sovereign national interest or public order, which is a rule about conduct rather than about who you are.
About five days. NIXI describes the process as completing in five 24-hour periods once the gaining registrar has initiated it with your authorisation code, and that code comes from your current registrar rather than from the registry. Compare that with a .uk, which moves on an IPS tag change and is usually done within minutes. Start the move well ahead of the expiry date, because an expired domain cannot be transferred at all.
