The .net.in extension is the network subdomain within India's .in namespace, managed by NIXI. Originally intended for internet service providers and network infrastructure companies, .net.in has broadened to serve any technology or network-related business operating in India. It provides a tech-focused identity within the Indian namespace when .in or .co.in isn't available.

Why .net.in is open but still needs KYC
NIXI splits the .in family into two lists, and knowing which list you are on answers most questions about .net.in. The unrestricted list runs to more than thirty zones, with .in, co.in and net.in among them, and the registry says of all of them that registration is available freely to all parties worldwide, and there are no nexus or other qualifications. The restricted list is short: ac.in, res.in, edu.in, gov.in and mil.in, each held for qualified organisations in India.
So net.in carries no local presence rule. It does carry KYC. NIXI publishes a page headed KYC is mandatory, pointing at guidelines issued by CERT-In under section 70B of the Information Technology Act 2000, and runs an eKYC portal for it. That is a real difference from a .com order and worth knowing before you begin one.
The rest is conventional. Names run from three to sixty-three characters, letters, digits and hyphens only, with no leading or trailing hyphen, and a name carrying hyphens in the third and fourth positions is rejected. Registrations run one to ten years, transfers are blocked for the first sixty days, and the registrant, administrative and technical contacts are displayed in the .in WHOIS.

- The zones you cannot have
- ac.in, res.in, edu.in, gov.in and mil.in are reserved for qualified academic, research, educational, government and military organisations in India. Applying for one without qualifying gets you nowhere.
- Contact data is published
- Registrants must provide true, accurate registrant, administrative, technical and billing contacts. NIXI states that this data is displayed in the .in WHOIS, with the billing contact the only one held back from public view.
- The registry can refuse or suspend
- NIXI reserves the authority to deny or suspend a registration where it conflicts with the sovereign national interest or public order. That is a wider discretion than most registries claim, and it sits in the general registration policies rather than in a footnote.

Is .net.in the right choice for you?

.net.in works well if
- You are an ISP, hosting company or network business trading in India, and the zone still reads as what it says on the tin.
- The .in and co.in for your name have gone, and you would rather hold the exact name on net.in than pad it out with a word.
- India search visibility is the objective. .in is a country code, so unlike a generic extension it carries a country signal.
Look elsewhere if
- You expect a card payment and a live domain within the minute. KYC is mandatory on .in registrations, so an identity step sits in the way.
- Your business is not a network or infrastructure one. To an Indian reader net.in still suggests plumbing rather than retail, and co.in or .in reads better.
- Your details get published. NIXI displays the registrant, administrative and technical contacts in the .in WHOIS, holding back only the billing contact.
If you are selling to Indian consumers rather than to network operators, the plain .in reads better and carries exactly the same country signal.
.net.in vs .com: which should you register?
Price is not the interesting difference here, because the two sit close together. The interesting difference is what each one tells an Indian visitor. A .com tells them nothing about where you are. A net.in tells them you are in the Indian namespace and, by the old convention, that you do something with networks.
Against that, a .com takes a card payment and goes live in a minute, while any .in registration involves KYC. If you are selling to India and the country signal matters in Google, take the .in family and accept the identity step. If India is one market among many and the site is global, the .com is less friction for much the same money.

Allow a little more time for the registration than you would elsewhere, and have identity documents to hand rather than discovering the requirement halfway through.
Not any more, and NIXI does not police it. The zone sits on the unrestricted list beside .in and co.in, so anyone may register one for anything. What has not changed is how it reads. An Indian visitor still associates net.in with network and infrastructure businesses, so a retailer on net.in is fighting the connotation rather than using it. If the association is wrong for you, the plain .in is usually the better buy at a similar price.
