What is a .mx domain?

The .mx domain is Mexico's country code, managed by NIC Mexico (part of ITESM, the Monterrey Institute of Technology). Mexico has over 100 million internet users and is Latin America's second-largest economy. Mexican consumers strongly prefer .mx for local businesses, and it performs well in Google Mexico search results. Registration is open to anyone worldwide, making it accessible for UK businesses targeting the Mexican market or the broader Latin American Spanish-speaking world.

Who should register .mx?

Mexican businesses, UK companies exporting to Mexico, tourism operators, and brands targeting Spanish-speaking consumers in Latin America.

The longer answer

.mx is open, org.mx and net.mx are not

Mexico runs a two-tier namespace, and only the top tier is open. Registry .MX publishes its general domain name policies, and for both the direct .mx domain and com.mx the entry reads the same way: reserved for any natural or legal person who requests it, requirements, none. No Mexican address, no tax registration, no documents.

Everything underneath is a different matter. org.mx is limited to non-profit bodies, civil associations, non-governmental organisations, religious groups, political parties and embassies or consulates legally constituted in Mexico, and the registry asks for documentation proving the status claimed. net.mx is for internet and telecommunications service providers registered with Mexico's Federal Telecommunications Institute. edu.mx is for institutions registered with the education ministry or incorporated universities, and research bodies. gob.mx is for federal, state and municipal government. A British charity cannot have an org.mx, and finding that out at the checkout is a wasted afternoon.

The choice most buyers face is therefore between .mx and com.mx, and both are equally open. The direct .mx is shorter and reads more cleanly in print; com.mx is the older habit and is still widely recognised. Neither carries an eligibility advantage over the other.

One obligation applies whichever you take: the registrar, the registrant and the contacts all accept that keeping their information current in the Registry .MX database is their responsibility. Registries that say that in their policy tend to act on it, so put a monitored address on the record rather than a mailbox nobody reads.

The honest answer

Is .mx the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.mx works well if

  • You sell into Mexico and want the address a Mexican customer recognises, with a Spanish-language site behind it rather than a translation widget.
  • You have a Mexican subsidiary, distributor or fulfilment partner and want the local market to see a local address.
  • Your brand is establishing itself across Spanish-speaking Latin America and Mexico is the market you are starting from.
  • You want a short address in a namespace where good names are still available, because .mx opened to direct registration long after .com filled up.

Look elsewhere if

  • Your customers are British. The country signal points at Mexico, and the annual cost is several times what a .co.uk renews at.
  • You assumed org.mx or net.mx would be available to you. Both are restricted to organisations constituted or registered in Mexico, with documents required.
  • You plan to redirect it to your main site and leave it. A redirect earns nothing in Mexican search results, so the fee buys only the defensive registration.

Not actually trading in Mexico yet? The .co.uk is the address that earns its keep while you decide. See .co.uk pricing.

Head to head

.mx vs .com: which should you register?

Both are open to anybody, so this is not an eligibility question. It is about which signal you want. A .com says nothing about where you are and is understood everywhere. A .mx says Mexico, to visitors and to search engines alike.

Pick .mx when the Mexican market is a real part of the plan and you have Spanish-language content to put on it. Pick .com when you are selling across Latin America rather than into one country, or when the brand needs one address that works in every market you touch.

Where both are worth having, the .com is the home address and the .mx is a Mexican site in its own right. Publishing separate content on it is what turns the country signal into visibility, and it is the difference between a domain that works and a domain you renew out of habit.

FAQ

.mx domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .mx domain.

Can't find what you're looking for?

Ask us directly

Yes. The published policy reserves .mx and com.mx for any natural or legal person who requests one and lists the requirements as none, so there is no Mexican presence test, no tax identification to supply and no documentation at the point of order. That openness applies only at those two levels, which is where people get caught out.

Take .mx if the name is free, since it is shorter and reads better in print and on a vehicle. com.mx is the older convention and remains widely used, so it is a sound second choice when the direct name has gone, and worth holding alongside if the brand matters. The rules and requirements are identical for both, so nothing but the name itself should decide it.

Only if it is legally constituted in Mexico. org.mx is limited to non-profit bodies, civil associations, non-governmental organisations, religious groups, political parties and embassies or consulates constituted there, and the registry requires documentation proving that status. A UK-registered charity does not qualify. The route that does work is the open .mx or com.mx, which have no requirements attached.

Probably not yet. The annual cost is several times a .co.uk and it earns nothing in UK results, so the case rests entirely on what you publish on it. A Spanish-language site aimed at Mexican customers justifies it. An occasional export order does not, and a redirect certainly does not, because a redirect gives Google nothing to rank in Mexico and leaves you paying for a signal nobody sees.
