What a .mu costs, and its public WHOIS rule
.mu is among the dearest extensions on this site, and the reason is demand rather than anything technical. Two-letter codes that also read as words get bid up, and mu is one of the better ones: music, mutual, a Greek letter, a unit of measurement. Mauritius is a small domestic market, so the pressure on the price comes from outside the country rather than from inside it.
The registry is Internet Direct Ltd, trading as MU-NIC from Port Louis, and it says it has adopted the Council of Country Code Administrators best practices for how .mu policy is developed and enforced. One clause in its registration agreement deserves reading before you order. Registrants acknowledge that all personal information supplied may be required to be publicly disclosed to third parties and used to maintain a public WHOIS service, and MU-NIC states that the WHOIS and the data within it belong to the registry, which can change them at any time.
Accurate contact details are described as an absolute condition of registration. Where what you supply is false, inaccurate or misleading, MU-NIC may terminate, suspend or place the domain on hold without notification and without a refund.
Is .mu the right choice for you?

.mu works well if
- You run a Mauritian business, resort or fund and want the local extension. It is the country code, and Google reads it as one.
- Your brand is built on those two letters, in music, in measurement or in your own initials, and the short address is the whole idea.
- The domain is a memorable redirect pointing at something longer, and the yearly cost is small against what the redirect is worth to you.
Look elsewhere if
- Price. This is one of the most expensive extensions we sell, it renews at the same level every year, and nothing about the DNS is any different from a .co.uk.
- Your customers are British and will not have heard of it. Spoken aloud, dot em you invites a spelling every time you give it out.
- Privacy matters to you. The registration agreement has you acknowledge that your details may be published in a public WHOIS, and the registry says that data belongs to it.

.mu vs .co.uk: which should you register?
Put these two side by side on cost and the gap is not close, and it repeats every year for as long as the business exists. What the .mu buys is length: two letters that happen to spell something, on an extension almost nobody around you has taken.
The honest split is by purpose. If the domain is your address, the thing on your invoices and your van, a .co.uk is cheaper, carries a UK signal in Google that .mu does not, and comes with free Nominet privacy for a UK individual, which .mu does not offer at all. If the domain is a short redirect for a campaign or an app, the .mu can earn its premium. Very few businesses need one domain to be both.

You are paying for the length and for the coincidence that mu reads as a word, not for anything technical, because the resolution, the DNSSEC support and the record types are identical to any other extension. Price it against a .co.uk over five years rather than one before you commit, because this is a recurring bill and not a purchase.
