What the three-character minimum means for .li names
Liechtenstein is a principality of about 160 square kilometres between Switzerland and Austria, and its country code has been in the root zone since 1993. The registry, NIC Liechtenstein, is operated by SWITCH on behalf of the Office for Communications of the Principality, and the rules sit in Liechtenstein law rather than in a commercial contract: the Communications Act and the .li Domain Name Ordinance, both published in the national law database.
Anyone can hold one. NIC Liechtenstein states that you do not have to be a Liechtenstein citizen or resident or domiciled there to register a .li domain, which puts it among the more open country codes in Europe. Registrations go through registrars rather than direct with the registry.
The rule that shapes what you can actually buy is the length limit. A name has to be at least three characters and at most 63, so the shortest wordplay does not work: single-letter and two-letter labels are out, and the neat one-syllable constructions people imagine when they first see this extension mostly fall on the wrong side of that line. Anything from three characters up is fair game, which still leaves room for names ending in li, family names and Italian or Swiss German words.
The price is the other half of the appeal. This is one of the cheapest country codes we sell and transfers in are free, which makes it a reasonable buy for a redirect, a campaign address or a defensive registration. It is not a UK search asset and it never will be.
Is .li the right choice for you?

.li works well if
- Your brand or product name ends in the letters li, and the split reads naturally rather than looking like a typing mistake.
- You do business in or with Liechtenstein or eastern Switzerland, where the extension is read as local rather than as a novelty.
- You want a short, cheap second address for a campaign or a redirect and do not want to spend real money on it.
- You are collecting the obvious variants of a name and this one is inexpensive enough to take without a business case.
Look elsewhere if
- You want the shortest possible domain hack. The three-character minimum rules out the single-letter tricks people usually have in mind.
- Your customers search from the UK. The country signal points at a state of forty thousand people, which is no help at all in Google UK.
- The name will be given out over the phone. Dot ell eye is heard as dot lee, dot L I and worse, and people will end up typing .com.

.li vs .is: which should you register?
Both are small-country extensions that the rest of the world buys for the letters. Neither asks where you live. What separates them is friction and price.
Pick .li when the ending finishes your word, when you want it registered in the next ten minutes, and when you do not want to spend much. It behaves like any ordinary extension. Pick .is when the word needs the verb and you can live with Iceland's technical gate, because ISNIC will not register a name until its nameservers are in place.
On both, the same caution applies as on any country code you have no national claim to. Buy it for the word, not as the permanent legal address of a business, and keep a .co.uk or .com alongside it so a policy change somewhere else is never your problem.

Registration is through a registrar rather than direct with the registry.
Three characters before the dot. The published rules set a minimum length of three and a maximum of 63, so the very short constructions that make this extension appealing on paper are often not available as a matter of policy rather than because somebody else took them. Work out the label you want and count it before you plan a brand around it.
SWITCH operates NIC Liechtenstein on behalf of the Office for Communications of the Principality of Liechtenstein, the same organisation that runs Switzerland's .ch. The legal basis is Liechtenstein law: the Communications Act and the .li Domain Name Ordinance, both published in the national law database. That is a more stable footing than a private registry contract, and it is one reason the rules here have stayed steady.
Rarely as a main address, and it is cheap enough that it does not have to be. There is no UK search benefit, British customers will not recognise the ending, and saying it aloud invites mistakes. Where it earns its place is as wordplay for a name that ends in those letters, as a working address for Liechtenstein or Swiss business, or as an inexpensive extra pointed at the domain that does the work.
