Why .lgbt has no community eligibility test

People assume a .lgbt domain is gated, and it isn't. The registry agreement, signed on 8 May 2014, is a plain base agreement with no Specification 12 community clause attached, and Specification 12 is the contractual mechanism ICANN uses when a registry is allowed to restrict who joins. .eco has one. .ngo has one. .lgbt does not. Anyone anywhere can register any available .lgbt for any purpose, with no check on who they are or what they intend to publish.

Worth knowing before you build a community around it, because the extension carries a meaning it has no power to enforce. What it does have is the Identity Digital acceptable use policy, which covers harassment and abuse of individuals or groups and gives the registry grounds to suspend a domain used that way. That is a floor, not a membership test.

The other thing to weigh is the price, which sits at the premium end and renews there annually. For a small volunteer group that is a recurring bill against a fixed budget, and a .org at a fraction of the cost carries recognition that .lgbt is still building.

The honest answer

Is .lgbt the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.lgbt works well if

  • You are running a Pride event, a support service or an advocacy campaign where the audience needs to know what the site is before they click.
  • Your organisation name is generic on its own, and the extension supplies the context in four characters instead of a strapline.
  • You want a short, unambiguous address to print on a poster or read out from a stage, where a long .org name would be a mouthful.

Look elsewhere if

  • Money is tight and the site has to run for years. A .lgbt costs several times a .org annually, and volunteer budgets rarely grow.
  • You need the extension to vouch for you. There is no eligibility test at all, so it says nothing about who registered it or why.
  • Your service is UK-specific and found through local search. A .co.uk gives Google a geographic signal that .lgbt does not.

Running a UK community group on a small budget? A .org costs a fraction of this and is better recognised. See .org pricing.

Head to head

.lgbt vs .org: which should you register?

.org has been shorthand for a non-profit since 1985 and needs no explaining to anybody. .lgbt explains the subject rather than the organisation, which is the opposite trade. A visitor reading a .org knows what kind of body runs it. A visitor reading citypride.lgbt knows what it is about.

Cost decides plenty of these. .lgbt renews at a multiple of .org every year, which for a volunteer-run group is a real line in the budget. A workable arrangement is the .org as the address you print everywhere, with the .lgbt pointed at it, so you carry the premium only for as long as it is earning its place.

.lgbt domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .lgbt domain.

Can't find what you're looking for?

Ask us directly

No. The .lgbt registry agreement is a plain ICANN base agreement with no community restriction, so there is no eligibility test, no application form and no verification of any kind. Anyone can register one. That matters in both directions: your group faces no paperwork, and a .lgbt address by itself is not evidence that the site behind it is run by or for the community it names.

It sits at the premium end and renews at that level every year, not only in year one. Check the price on this page against a .org before committing, because the difference compounds: a group running a site for a decade pays it ten times over. Registration terms run in one-year increments up to a maximum of ten years at a time under the ICANN base agreement, so you can pay ahead but you cannot buy it outright.

Nothing stops the registration, but the use is covered. Identity Digital reserves the right to deny, suspend, cancel or lock a domain where the use is abusive, and its published list of abusive uses includes cyber-bullying, harassment and other forms of abuse to individuals or groups, along with incitement to violence. Reports go to Identity Digital through the abuse route on its site. That is a response after the fact rather than a gate at the front, which is the honest position on every open extension.
