Why ind.in reads as India, not as individual
NIXI's own list glosses ind.in as individuals, which is the purpose of the label and also the source of its problem. Say the address out loud and ind reads as India, not as individual. A visitor seeing yourname.ind.in mostly parses it as an Indian address with an extra syllable, which is a fair description of what it is.
None of the individual part is enforced. ind.in sits in NIXI's unrestricted list beside .in, co.in, firm.in and gen.in, under the same statement that registration is available freely to all parties worldwide with no nexus or other qualifications. A company can hold one. So can somebody who has never been to India. The reserved zones, the ones that are actually gated, are ac.in, res.in, edu.in, gov.in and mil.in.
There is a real consideration for a personal site, though. NIXI states that registrant, administrative and technical contact data is displayed in the .IN WHOIS, with only the billing contact withheld. Free WHOIS privacy on this site is a .uk arrangement, made under Nominet's rules for UK individuals; on an Indian name privacy is a paid add-on. If your home address is the registrant address, ask us before you order rather than afterwards.

Look elsewhere if
- You are a company. Nothing stops you registering one, but the label says individual and a visitor who knows that will wonder why you chose it.

.ind.in vs .me: which should you register?
These are the two ways to say "this site is a person". A .me does it internationally and does it without a country attached, because Google names .me on its published list of country codes treated as generic. ind.in does it inside the Indian namespace, where Google reads the address as intended for India.
Pick .me for a portfolio or a personal brand aimed at clients anywhere. Pick ind.in when your work, your clients and your search visibility are all Indian and the country signal is worth having. Do not pick ind.in expecting the individual label to be understood the way .me is: most people read the ind as India and move on.
