Why gen.in is the weakest of India's open zones
NIXI's own listing gives gen.in a one word gloss: general. That is the whole positioning. Where co.in says company, firm.in says firm and ind.in says individual, gen.in says nothing in particular, which is either its problem or its point depending on what you need from it.
The case for it is availability. It sits in the same unrestricted list as .in and co.in, under the same registry statement that registration is available freely to all parties worldwide with no nexus or other qualifications, and it is the least picked over of the group. More of the obvious words survive there than anywhere else in the Indian namespace.
The case against it is that a label nobody recognises does not earn its extra syllable. An Indian visitor reads co.in instantly. A plain .in reads as India and nothing else, which is normally exactly what you want. gen.in has to be explained, and an address you explain over the phone is a small cost you pay every single time.
Register it when the word matters more than the extension and the shorter options have gone. Otherwise this is the one in the group to skip.

These are the same registry, the same rules, the same price here and the same country signal. Everything that separates them happens in the reader's head. co.in is the Indian equivalent of .co.uk and gets read correctly without a pause; gen.in gets read as a typo or a puzzle by anyone who has not met it before.
Pick co.in whenever the name is available, without much further thought. Pick gen.in when it is not, when firm.in and ind.in do not describe you either, and when you would still rather have the exact word than a compromised version of it under a better known label. That is a narrow case, and it is fine to decide it does not apply to you.

It can, in the way any unfamiliar address does. A visitor who does not recognise the extension spends a moment working out whether the site is legitimate, and that moment is a real cost on a checkout page or a contact form. It is much less of an issue for an internal tool, a campaign page or a redirect. If the site is the front door to a business selling in India, the money saved by taking gen.in over a better name under .in is not usually money well saved.
