What is a .fyi domain?
The .fyi domain stands for "for your information" and suits knowledge bases, FAQ portals, and informational microsites. It's informal enough for a community wiki but professional enough for a corporate information hub. Three letters that everyone already understands.

Choosing .fyi over .info for a knowledge base
.fyi is three characters, reads as one word, and means the same thing to a British reader as an American one, which is more than most of the 2014 to 2015 crop manage. Binky Moon runs it under a plain base agreement with no restrictions, and it reached the root zone on 14 May 2015, late enough that plenty of ordinary two-word phrases are still sitting there unregistered.
The job it does well is the sub-site: a help centre, a product FAQ, a status and information hub, an internal wiki you occasionally share outside the company. It suits content whose whole promise is that the answer is here and you will not have to hunt for it.
Where it goes wrong is as a primary business address. Nobody reads acme.fyi and works out what Acme sells. It also invites a mistyped .com, because the habit of typing a company name is hard to break. Our usual steer is to run a .fyi alongside the main site rather than instead of it, which is how most of the recognisable .fyi sites are set up anyway.
Is .fyi the right choice for you?
We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.
.fyi works well if
- You are building a help centre or knowledge base that sits beside a main site, and you want the URL itself to say what it is.
- The .info you wanted went years ago and the .com went before that. .fyi is the same idea with names still available.
- You want an abbreviation that reads identically in British and American English, which rules out most of the slang extensions.
Look elsewhere if
- It is your only address. acme.fyi tells a visitor nothing about what Acme does, and a customer will reach for acme.com out of habit.
- You want the extension to do some persuading. .fyi is neutral by design, which is useful on a manual and useless on a sales page.
- You sell locally in the UK. A .co.uk carries a geographic signal in Google that .fyi does not, and costs less than half as much per year.
Only one domain in the budget and UK customers to reach? Buy the .co.uk first and add this later. See .co.uk pricing.
.fyi vs .info: which should you register?
These two want the same job and come from different eras. .info has been in the root zone since June 2001, so almost every short, obvious phrase in it went long ago and what remains tends to be long or hyphenated. .fyi arrived in 2015 with the shelves comparatively full.
Price is close enough not to decide it. The real question is what you are naming. For a public reference site with a descriptive name, .info still reads correctly and has two decades of familiarity behind it. For a branded help centre hanging off a company name, .fyi is shorter, less generic and far more likely to be available.
.fyi domain questions, answered
What people ask us before registering a .fyi domain.
Can't find what you're looking for?
Ask us directlyFor your information, the same abbreviation people have been putting at the top of forwarded emails since long before it became a domain extension. That is the appeal in one line: it needs no explaining in either British or American English, and it sets the expectation that whatever sits behind the address is reference material rather than a sales pitch. The registry attaches no meaning of its own and imposes no rules about what you publish there.
It is neutral. Google treats .fyi as a generic extension, so it carries no country signal and no ranking advantage or penalty of its own. What matters far more on an information site is whether the content answers the question and whether the pages are linked and structured well enough to be crawled properly. The one real consideration is local: if your customers search from the UK, a .co.uk gives you a geographic signal that .fyi cannot.
Probably not, unless information is the product. The extension describes a type of content rather than a business, so it works for support.yourfirm.fyi and works against you for yourfirm.fyi as a homepage. There is also the typing problem: anyone who half-remembers your name will reach for .com. The arrangement that survives contact with real customers is the main site where it already is, with the .fyi pointed at the documentation.
