What the 2026 .pt rules mean for .com.pt
Portugal's registry rewrote its rulebook this year. The 2026 Registration Rules came into force on 1 July 2026 following a public consultation held in April, and the registry now answers at pt.pt rather than the older dns.pt address.
Read those rules and the .com.pt story is quietly funny. Section II is headed "Specific Registration Conditions under .com.pt", and Article 10 in full says that names under the com.pt classifier must comply with the general conditions in Section I. No extra hurdle, no Portuguese nexus, nothing. What there is instead is a registry that checks up on you afterwards.
Article 9 makes data validation continuous rather than a one-off at checkout. Where .PT has well founded doubts about your contact details it gives you ten days to confirm or correct them, and if you miss that window it removes the domain. Article 8 lets it sample new registrations within ten days against the refusal grounds. Article 3 will not put your name in the .pt zone at all unless two properly configured authoritative name servers answer for it.
None of that is unreasonable. It does mean a .com.pt with a dead mailbox behind it is a liability.

- No local presence needed
- The 2026 Registration Rules set no requirement for a Portuguese address, company or citizenship. Article 10 confirms that .com.pt carries no conditions beyond the general ones applying to every .pt name.
- Ten days to answer a data check
- Under Article 9, where .PT has well founded doubts about the accuracy, truthfulness or completeness of your registration data it notifies you and allows ten days to confirm or correct it. That validation is repeated periodically, not just at registration.
- Geographical names are fenced off
- Article 6 refuses any name matching a protected Portuguese or European designation of origin or geographical indication. Article 7 reserves country names, Portuguese parishes, municipalities and administrative regions, and well known foreign cities, for the competent authority or somebody it has authorised.
- Two working name servers, or no delegation
- Article 3 requires at least two correctly configured authoritative name servers, preferably on separate networks. Without them the name stays in Reserved status and never enters the .pt zone, so nothing resolves.
- If you do not respond
- Once the ten day window closes without a complete and accurate answer, .PT removes the domain immediately. The website and the email go with it. Keep the contact address on the registration live and monitored by somebody who still works for you.

Look elsewhere if
- Your registration details sit in a mailbox nobody reads. A missed Article 9 data check costs you the domain, not a reminder.
- You sell only in the UK. A Portuguese extension points your geographic signal at Portugal and costs several times a .co.uk every year.

.com.pt vs .pt: which should you register?
The 2026 rules treat these as very nearly the same product. Both sit in Portugal's country code namespace, both are open to registrants anywhere, and both are subject to the same validation, refusal and delegation articles. The registry gave .com.pt its own section of the rulebook and then used it to say that nothing extra applies.
Take the .pt if the name is free, because it is shorter and it is what a Portuguese customer expects to type. Take the .com.pt when the .pt has gone, or when you want the commercial reading to be explicit for a market where a lot of institutional and personal sites also sit directly under .pt.
