This domain has registration restrictions
Red.es allows anyone with links to Spain to register from anywhere in the world, and lists an absence of such links among the grounds for cancelling an .es domain. Read the full eligibility rules.
What is a .com.es domain?
The .com.es extension is the commercial subdomain of Spain's .es country code, managed by Red.es (a public entity under Spain's Ministry of Economic Affairs). Spain has over 40 million internet users and a growing e-commerce sector. While .es is more commonly used, .com.es offers a clear commercial signal within the Spanish namespace. Registration is open from anywhere in the world to anyone with links to Spain, which a UK business trading into the Spanish market has. Red.es assigns without checking up front, but an absence of any Spanish interest is a published ground for cancelling the domain later, so the link needs to be real.
Who should register .com.es?
Spanish businesses, UK companies expanding into Spain, tourism operators, and e-commerce brands targeting Spanish consumers.
Why choose .com.es?

The links to Spain test behind every .com.es
Red.es, the public body that manages Spain's namespace for the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, states the rule in a single line on its own registration page: anyone who has links to Spain can apply for an .es domain from anywhere in the world. That is not the same as open to anyone, and the difference is the part worth understanding before you order.
Nobody checks at the checkout. .com.es is one of the extensions Red.es assigns automatically, described as being for any type of activity and available to individuals and private enterprises alike. Only gob.es and edu.es require prior verification. The check on the rest, if it ever comes, comes later: Red.es lists among the grounds for cancelling an .es domain that it was requested by a person or entity with no interests in or links with Spain.
In practice the bar sits low. Selling to Spanish customers, running a Spanish-language site, holding a Spanish trade mark or having a supplier there all describe a link. Buying the name because the letters happen to spell a word in English, with no Spanish activity whatever, is the case the rule exists for.
Who is allowed to register .com.es?
Red.es allows anyone with links to Spain to register from anywhere in the world, and lists an absence of such links among the grounds for cancelling an .es domain.
- The rule as published
- Red.es states that anyone who has links to Spain can apply for an .es domain from anywhere in the world. There is no nationality or residency requirement, and .com.es is assigned automatically with no prior verification.
- What .com.es is for
- Red.es describes .com.es as being for any type of activity, available to individuals and private enterprises. That is broader than .nom.es, which only individuals may hold, and .org.es, which is for non-profit organisations, institutions and groups.
- The zones that are checked
- Only gob.es and edu.es require prior verification, being reserved for public bodies and for organisations with education or research activities in Spain respectively. Everything else is granted automatically, subject to lists of banned terms, reserved terms and pre-assigned names.
- No links to Spain
- Red.es includes among its published grounds for cancelling an .es domain that it was requested by a natural or legal person, or an unincorporated entity, with no interests in or links with Spain. The rule bites after registration rather than at the point of sale, so keep a note of what your link actually is.
Rules taken from the Red.es guide to registering a domain. Registry policy can change, so check before you buy if the answer matters to you.
Not sure whether you qualify? Ask us before you order and we will check the registry rules with you. We would rather answer the question than take an order the registry will refuse.
Is .com.es the right choice for you?
We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.
.com.es works well if
- You sell into Spain and the .es for your name has gone. The com.es keeps the country in the address without renaming the business.
- You want a commercial-looking Spanish address for a subsidiary or a distributor, kept separate from the group site on .com.
- You are protecting a brand across the Spanish namespace and want the commercial variant sitting alongside the .es.
Look elsewhere if
- The plain .es is still free for your name. Take that: Spanish visitors read .es as the default and com.es as the fallback.
- You have no link to Spain at all. The rule is soft and unchecked at the checkout, but it is a published ground for cancellation and it is not worth risking a main address on.
- Your customers search from Britain. A Spanish extension does nothing in Google UK, and running a Spanish site properly means Spanish content, not a translated menu.
No Spanish trading connection at all? A .com carries no eligibility condition and travels everywhere. See .com pricing.
.com.es vs .eu: which should you register?
Both are European, both carry an eligibility condition, and the two conditions are worlds apart in weight. A .eu has been closed to UK-established organisations since the transition period ended, and EURid enforces it: domains held by registrants with a GB country code were suspended and then withdrawn. A .com.es asks only that you have links to Spain, checks nothing at the point of sale, and treats the absence of links as a ground for cancellation rather than as a gate.
For a UK business trading into Spain that makes .com.es the far easier buy, and the more precise one, because it names a market rather than a bloc. If you sell across several member states and can meet the .eu criteria through an EU entity or a qualifying citizenship, .eu covers the lot with one address. If Spain is the market, buy the Spanish ending and put Spanish content behind it.
.com.es domain questions, answered
What people ask us before registering a .com.es domain.
Can't find what you're looking for?
Ask us directlyYes, if it has links to Spain, and Red.es allows the application from anywhere in the world. There is no nationality test and no Spanish company requirement, and .com.es is assigned automatically without prior verification. The condition is real but light: Red.es lists a domain having been requested by a person or entity with no interests in or links with Spain among the grounds on which an .es registration can be cancelled. Trading into Spain is comfortably enough.
Red.es publishes no checklist, which is part of why the rule is workable. Selling to Spanish customers, running a Spanish-language site, holding a Spanish trade mark, having a supplier, a distributor or an office there, or owning property in Spain all describe a link. Buying the name purely because the letters spell something in English, with no Spanish activity at all, is the case the cancellation ground is written for. If your position is arguable, keep the evidence with the registration.
The plain .es is the stronger of the two and the one Spanish visitors expect, so take it if the name is free. .com.es earns its place when the .es has gone, when you want a commercial-looking address for a Spanish subsidiary, or when you are holding the namespace defensively. Both sit under the same country code and carry the same Spanish signal to Google, so the difference between them is recognition rather than ranking.
