The .co.ma extension is the commercial subdomain of Morocco's .ma country code, managed by ANRT (Agence Nationale de Reglementation des Telecommunications). Morocco is North Africa's second-largest economy and a growing hub for nearshore IT services and tourism. A .co.ma domain gives businesses a commercial identity in the Moroccan market. It's less widely registered than .ma, which means better name availability.

The Moroccan contact every .co.ma domain needs
ANRT, Morocco's telecoms regulator, has run the .ma namespace since ICANN re-delegated it in 2006, under the country's post and telecommunications law. Its own FAQ says any natural or legal person may apply for a name, which sounds fully open, and for the application itself it is.
The condition sits in the registration terms rather than on the eligibility page. ANRT requires you to appoint an administrative contact who is a natural person established in Morocco, to manage the domain with your provider and with the regulator. If you are an individual you may act as your own administrative contact, but only if you are established in Morocco. So a UK business can hold a co.ma, and it needs somebody on the ground willing to be named on the record. That person gets no rights over the domain, which ANRT states in writing.
Two more things to plan for. Names activate immediately unless ANRT wants to examine them, which it does for reserved terms and for anything under gov.ma, ac.ma or press.ma. And you cannot simply edit the registrant name later, because changing holder is a separate procedure.
Who is allowed to register .co.ma?
Anyone may apply for a .ma or co.ma name, but ANRT requires the administrative contact on the record to be a natural person established in Morocco.
- Who may apply
- ANRT states that any natural or legal person may submit a registration request through a declared provider, subject to the naming decision that governs the namespace. There is no requirement for the registrant itself to be Moroccan or to hold a Moroccan company.
- The Moroccan contact
- You must appoint an administrative contact who is a natural person established in Morocco, to manage the domain with your provider and with ANRT. An individual registrant may act as their own administrative contact only if they are themselves established in Morocco.
- The contact holds no rights
- ANRT states that where the administrative contact is not you, that person has no rights over your domain name. Naming a Moroccan partner, employee or agent does not hand them control of the registration, which is the usual worry about the requirement.
- Names that get examined
- A name is registered and activated immediately unless ANRT requires prior validation, which applies to names on the reserved terms list and to anything under gov.ma, ac.ma or press.ma. You then have five days to supply evidence of your right to the name, and if you do not, the request is deleted and the name released.

Is .co.ma the right choice for you?

.co.ma works well if
- You have a Moroccan office, distributor or agent who can be named as the administrative contact, which the rules require of you anyway.
- You are selling into French-speaking North Africa and want an address that reads as local rather than as an import.
- The .ma for your name has gone. co.ma is less heavily registered, so the exact name you want is more often still free.
Look elsewhere if
- You have nobody in Morocco. The administrative contact has to be a natural person established there, and inventing one is a poor way to start a registration.
- Cost matters. This is one of the more expensive endings we sell, several times a .co.uk, and it renews at that level every year.
- You are testing the market. Between the local contact requirement and the price, a speculative co.ma is a great deal of friction for a maybe.

.co.ma vs .africa: which should you register?
Both point at Africa and they do it from opposite ends. A .africa is continental, open to anyone anywhere, and cheap. A co.ma is national, needs a Moroccan administrative contact, and costs several times as much.
The trade is precision against reach. If Morocco specifically is the market, the country code does something .africa cannot, because Google treats a country code as a signal that a site targets that country while .africa is a generic extension in the root zone. If your interest in the region is broader than one country, or there is nobody in Morocco to name on the record, .africa is the cheaper and simpler answer, and it will not stop working because a contact moved on.

Any natural person established in Morocco, and ANRT states plainly that the role carries no rights over the domain. That distinction matters, because the usual worry about naming a local agent is that they end up controlling the name, and the regulator has closed that off in writing. Keep the registrant details in your own or your company's name, and treat the administrative contact as an operational role you can change later if the relationship changes.
Usually within a day. ANRT processes requests first come, first served and says that a registration not requiring its prior examination is handled within one day at most. Prior examination applies where the name is on the reserved terms list, or where it is being registered under gov.ma, ac.ma or press.ma, and you then have five days to produce evidence of your right to the name. Miss that deadline and the request is deleted and the name goes back into the pool.
